How to: Lunge a Horse

I have done a few videos/ posts like this in the past & had a great response to them.
I know I am only covering the more simple things that you learn as an equestrian, however some of these things are very useful to know.

Today we're talking about how to lunge a horse.

Lunging is a great way to help with training & exercising a horse. If a rider is unable to ride they might be able to lunge instead. If your horse has a lot energy & you'd rather not get on straight away it's a good way to get some excess energy out. If your horse is young or lacking balance. Honestly there are SO many reasons to lunge a horse!

There are also different types of equipment you can lunge a horse in. You can simply use tack with a lunge line, or add side reins or a pessoa (which is what you can see Jem in here).

So there are a few key things when it comes to lunging. I would say that one is to try not to let your lunge line get too slack, it's best to keep some tension on there. This will reduce the likelihood of the horse turning or falling the circle into you. Another key thing is the same shape you want to create whilst lunging. What I mean by this is between you the horse & the lunge line (possibly a lunge whip too), you want to create a triangle shape. Preferably more of a right angle triangle, so you are positioned towards the backend of your horse.
Another key thing is confidence. You need to lunge with a confident & encouraging attitude to get the best our of your horse.
