I have done a few videos/ posts like this in the past & had a great response to them.
I know I am only covering the more simple things that you learn as an equestrian, however some of these things are very useful to know.
Today we're talking about how to lunge a horse.
Lunging is a great way to help with training & exercising a horse. If a rider is unable to ride they might be able to lunge instead. If your horse has a lot energy & you'd rather not get on straight away it's a good way to get some excess energy out. If your horse is young or lacking balance. Honestly there are SO many reasons to lunge a horse!
There are also different types of equipment you can lunge a horse in. You can simply use tack with a lunge line, or add side reins or a pessoa (which is what you can see Jem in here).
So there are a few key things when it comes to lunging. I would say that one is to try not to let your lunge line get too slack, it's best to keep some tension on there. This will reduce the likelihood of the horse turning or falling the circle into you. Another key thing is the same shape you want to create whilst lunging. What I mean by this is between you the horse & the lunge line (possibly a lunge whip too), you want to create a triangle shape. Preferably more of a right angle triangle, so you are positioned towards the backend of your horse.
Another key thing is confidence. You need to lunge with a confident & encouraging attitude to get the best our of your horse.
We don't talk enough about horsey stuff here on the blog, so I think it's definitely time for another horsey holy grail!
The product that is a holy grail for me down the yard is NAF's NAF OFF Extra Effect Fly Repellent.
There are a lot of brands that make fly repellents, but finding one that actually works is another question. This one by NAF is one of very few I have tried that seems to work!
So why do I like this one so much?
Well firstly the packaging/ branding is great & NAF are a brand with a great reputation for a lot of different horse products (including medical, supplements & more). This fly spray also seems to last me quite a while, the standard size of these is 750ml.
Another thing, like I mentioned before, this fly spray actually works. It does actually repel flies! I would say it needs reapplying after about 4 hours though.
Another product which is the same as this, is the gel version is also a favourite of mine. It can last up to 6 hours from my experience & is perfect for sensitive skin areas. For example if your horse has pink hair swirls or sensitive eyes, the gel version of this is perfect.
So if you haven't tried any of NAF's fly repellent products, I'd definitely recommend them!
It's time for another horsey moment here on the blog!
Today's subject: tail trimming.
I love when a horse has a lovely long tail, however there comes a length where it just needs trimming. Otherwise they can get messy & scraggy looking, which is not a good look!
Here is a short video tutorial on here to trim a horses tail.
With everything I do, I like to tie in all of my interests.
If you guys didn't know, I have a horse & having been horse riding for many years.
This also seems to be a topic I haven't seen many blogs cover!
So onto the product I want to talk about...
Coconut oil!
Coconut oil is a holy grail in general for a lot of people, I don't use it much for myself. My horse however...
My horse has very pink skin (he's an Appaloosa colour, so it's a mixture of black & pink) and this means the minute the ground dries out he gets scabby skin. Specifically on his fetlocks, which is not ideal. What can make this worse is if the horse over reaches too, which my horse does sometimes.
I didn't really know what to use on them, as a lot of products we've used in the past haven't worked that well. Some of the products we have been recommended & used in the past have also had a lot of strong chemicals in them, which I don't like the idea of much.
So I decided to go all natural & try coconut oil!
It is amazing stuff!
It's completely got rid of any scabs on his first fetlocks & reduced them significantly on his back fetlocks. We still apply it daily to keep the fetlocks moist & prevent new scabs forming, but it seems to be working at keeping them at bay.
He also has been suffering with some mild sweet itch and the coconut oil has eased that too!
He's pretty much stopped scratching both his tail & mane.
I thought it would be interesting to have a little look back at some of my recent Instagram photos & have a recap!
If you don't already follow me on Instagram you can by clicking here!
So we'll start with the top left.
This is the most recent photo, which shows the results of my favourite tanning product by Sun Goddess! I love this fake tan & I'm not really one for fake tanning, so that's saying something!
The second photo is of some band merch. My brother's band to be precise! The band is Everybody Looks Famous, you can check them out here. Even if you just like merch, it's always good to help out unsigned bands.
The photo on the top right is of me riding my horse.
I've being horse riding since the age of 7 & have owned my horse for 8 years. There is nothing more perfect to me than this right here! Horse riding is my little escape & I love it!
The photo on the bottom left is from a meal I had recently.
The restaurant is in The Mailbox Birmingham & is called Gas Street Social. It's quite a casual setting but equally quite fancy. I love the setting & the food. This photo is from the first time me & Reece (my partner) went but we have been back since.
The next photo is off a lovely golden bottle of prosecco & glasses. These were a birthday present for my 21st birthday last year. I included this photo as it was a great time & this was a lovely gift.
The last photo is of my camera (well one of them), to be exact my D7100. I love this camera, it's literally bae (sorry). I use this camera for photoshoots & for filming all of my youtube videos. It's also what I use to take my blog photos. It's just such an important 'tool' to me. I couldn't live without it!
